Poole Museum – A bold new vision

16 March 2026

Members of the SW Fed came together to explore the inspiring spaces and thoughtfully interpreted collections at the newly redeveloped Poole Museum. Interim Museum Director, Jaine Fitzpatrick, and Capital Project Manager, Alison Gudgeon, were generous with their time, leading a tour that brought to life the changes delivered through the £10.3m, seven-year redevelopment supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Jaine and Alison shared honest reflections on the project, including the challenges faced along the way and how these were navigated. They offered valuable insight into the decisions behind creating a truly accessible cultural destination, part of the fabric of the lives of the people of Poole.

A strong sense of community ran throughout the project. This was evident in collaborations with local people on both content and design, as well as in moves to make the archives more visible and accessible, alongside the development of shared community archives collecting local stories and memories.

With plenty of time for questions and discussion, the visit sparked useful exchanges, shared learning and new connections. We would highly recommend a visit to Poole Museum, with its beautiful spaces, wonderful shop and compelling stories and displays throughout. A fantastic addition to the cultural heritage landscape in the South West.
