Mary Rose: Grave to Cradle, Seabed to Showcase
Join us at the Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard to discover the incredibly rich history of the Tudor ship and hear from the team behind the museum.
The event will begin with a fascinating talk by Head of Research, Dr Alexzandra Hildred. Dr Hildred was part of the original dive excavation team and played a pivotal role in creating the museum we see today.
After the talk, members will be taken on a guided tour of the ship and museum in smaller groups and have the chance to visit the new 4D Dive experience, which opened in May 2023. Contributing MRM staff will include Alastair Miles, Acting Collections Director, and Hannah Matthews, Curator.
The afternoon will end with networking over mulled wine/ spiced apple juice and a festive treat in the Learning Suite.
The Mary Rose was built in 1510–11 at the start of Henry VIII’s reign, and was one of his favourite ships for 34 years until it sank in 1545. King Henry is credited as the founding father of the Royal Navy and established an impressive fleet, with many vessels – like the Mary Rose – being built in his dockyard in Portsmouth.
