Creating a Queer Museum

Creating a Queer Museum

In 2018 Queer Britain was founded by Joseph Galliano-Doig, a former editor of Gay Times, and Ian Mehrtens in order to establish the UK's first bricks and mortar LGBTQ+ history museum. Since then the organisation has opened the doors to its first physical location, welcomed thousands of visitors, presented wide ranging exhibitions and displays, and ran dozens of varied events. This talk will detail the museum's history, programmatic strategy, and approach to audiences as a growing cultural organisation.

Jennifer Shearman is Head of Programme and Collection (Curator) at Queer Britain, the UK's first LGBTQ+ museum. Previously she held the role of Curator, Public Programmes at Tate and Curated Tate Britain’s Queer and Now. She has taught on curatorial practice and critical pedagogies at Goldsmiths (UoL), University of the Arts London, and Queen Mary, (UoL).
